Field Visit

Playwriting often demands that the writer will have a strong OBSERVATION. To improve observation and to test the writer's ability to follow conversation from everyday life, FIELD VISITS can be very effective. In preparing your Field Visit presentation, follow the instructions carefully. For Examination purpose, you will make a 6-10 minutes PPT presentation for the course conductor. You must take picture, videos, and audio clips for inclusion in the PPT presentation. Using graph or tables are encouraged.

Topic: Fieldwork

The fieldwork requires that you will visit any public thoroughfares and produce a Case-study report. Follow the guidelines below.

1. Visit a public place where a lot of people interact on an urgent basis.

2. You can choose any of the public-place locations here: (1) Government Hospital Emergency; (2) Orthopedic Hospital (পঙ্গু হাসপাতাল) Emergency; (3) Court Room in Old Dhaka or in High Court premises near National Eidgah; (4) Police Station (Thana) of your locality; (5) Local Kachabazar (স্থানীয় কাঁচাবাজার); (6) Kamalapur rail station.

3. Take hand-notes on the following:

a.      Describe the scenario.
b.      Give brief portraits of the place and people.
c.      Identify 4 characters whom you find interesting for your purpose of description.
d.      Write down their conversation in your notes.
e.      If needed, you can record your own words and thoughts in your mobile. Use your audio records later for submitting your case study.
f.       If the persons you have talked to or interviewed allow you to take photos, take it.

4. Write down your fieldwork case-study under the following headings.

a.      Name of Place: 2-5 words.
b.      Reasons for choosing the Place: One or two sentences
c.      General description of the place and its people: 5-6 sentences
d.      Three or Four interesting situations that you witnessed: 300 words
e.      The language used by observed characters (Is there any technical language used in their conversation? Is there any professional man/woman? A doctor’s language? A policeman’s language?): 250 words
f.       Dialogues I found interesting and might use in my New Play: 250 words
g.      Brief Story that made up based on my Fieldwork Study: 200 words

In the final part DUSCUSS how the Field Visit has improved your idea of how dramatic events are shaped, how the visit has enhanced your idea of playwriting, and how you are going to use the field-visit lessons to write effective Dialogues in your own plays.

Take pictures of Hand-notes and submit these along with your field work study.
